Aussie singer-songwriter Bertie Blackman is set to hit the UK with her brand new album, Secrets and Lies.
She’s been hailed as Australia’s answer to Florence And The Machine, but in fact, the 26-year-old is a true original.
“I’m not like anyone,” she explains. “That’s why it’s taken longer for me to get anywhere in Australia.”
Sydney-born Blackman discovered her voice ”by accident”, when her school band needed a singer. She taught herself guitar and joined a band “playing Nirvana covers”.
Her first two albums continued in this guitar-led vein, but then her curiosity for synths kicked in. “I was frustrated because I could hear these sounds but couldn’t make them on the guitar,” Blackman says.
Blackman went on to win an Aria award for Best Independent Release, calling it “a lovely spiky thing that I’ll probably impale myself on.”
TNT Music defies anyone to put out a sexier song this year than the LP’s first single, Black Cats, with its rippling ’tronics and sultry vocals.
