Traveling to the United Kingdom is set to change with the introduction of the new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system. Here’s what you need to know!
What is the ETA?
The ETA is a new requirement for visitors from visa-exempt countries to obtain prior authorisation before traveling to the UK. Designed to enhance security and streamline border processes, it’s essential for most travellers planning to visit for tourism, business, or short stays.
Who Needs an ETA?
From 8 January 2025, travellers from 48 non-European visa-exempt countries including the United States, Canada, and Australia will need an ETA. And from 2 April 2025, citizens of European Union countries will also need one. British and Irish citizens don’t need to worry about this, nor do people with existing UK visas or permissions to live, work, or study in the UK.
How to Apply
The good news? The application process is quick and all online:
- Provide Your Details: You’ll need your passport info, some personal details, biometric data (like a photo), and answers to a few security questions.
- Pay the Fee: It’ll set you back £10 per person.
- Processing Time: Most applications get sorted within three working days.
Applications opened on 27 November 2024 for non-European travellers and will open on 5 March 2025 for European travellers. Once you’ve got your ETA, it’s valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You can use it for multiple trips, with each visit lasting up to six months.
Things to Keep in Mind
An ETA doesn’t guarantee entry to the UK, that decision lies with border officials when you arrive. Also, make sure you have your ETA sorted before you travel, as airlines will check it before letting you board.
Plan Ahead
With this new rule in place, it’s a good idea to get organised well before your trip. For all the details and to apply, head to the official UK government website. A bit of planning now means you can focus on enjoying your UK adventure later!
