Fifteen people have been killed at a shooting at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises in the suburb of Aurora in Denver, Colorado. Ten victims have been confirmed dead at the scene with five dying later at a nearby hospital.
Police estimate that fifty people, including children, have been injured during the shooting at which, according to reports, a man dressed in black and wearing a gas mask walked in to a midnight screening of the latest Batman film and began opening fire on the audience with a rifle and two handguns.
A suspect was arrested at a nearby car park, who told police that there was explosives stored at his home, leading to the evacuation of an Aurora apartment block.
Police Chief Dan Oates has said of the incident in a news conference:
“Approximately at 12.30 this morning a gunman appeared at the front of one of the theatres in the Century 16 Theatre. Witnesses tell us that he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and a gas emerged and then we know that the gunman opened fire.”
The shooting is not thought to be a terrorist related incident.
