A new trailer has been unveiled for The Wizard of Oz prequel Oz The Great and Powerful, and it’s looking like one of the standouts of next year already.

With a black and white prologue that sees James Franco’s ‘wizard from Kansas’ Oz magician swept up in a tornado and transported to, err,  Oz, it remains faithful to the 1939 original, albeit with a little more CG trickery and scale.

Oz meets a little trilogy of witches – played by Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis – with whom he must work to defend Oz from the Wicked Witch.

There’s munchkins,  and Emerald City and a load of 3D colourful goings on (it’s from the producers who made Burton’s Alice in Wonderland).

The prequel to The Wizard of Oz is directed by Sam Raimi, the man behind the original Spider-Man series and is set to hit theatres next March.
