“Hands off cocks and on socks” is what you expect the sergeant-style fitness instructors at boot camp to bellow.
Sessions not modelled on army workouts, however, are much less scary.
One of our favourites in the city has to be with Free Form Fitness. Now, we’re not saying it’s a walk in the park, far from it, but if you consistently turn up you will see mad results.
The instructors will help you tone problem areas, such as bums and tums, and each session will improve your cardio performance.
While classes start painfully early, at 6.15am, they’ll put you through a series of planks and push ups to set you up for the rest of the day, making you feel energised and rejuvenated.
A couple of days later you’ll realise the effects (don’t book in a game of football or squash with your buddies – as you may not be able to walk).
After sessions with Free Form Fitness, devotee Caroline Kuhn says she’s never felt fitter: “I am now in probably the best overall shape in my life.”
Another boot camper, Richard Fairgrieve, says instructor Sybille Hazward will run rings around you.
“Don’t underestimate this woman who looks all small and cute.” It’s £30 for six sessions.
