Wimbledon’s liveliest traditional pub has been going strong for decades and is a firm favourite with Wimbledon town residents young and old, and it’s just a stone’s throw away from the main rail and Tube stations.
The scene As with a large number of pubs in southwest London, this Young’s brewery-owned joint has enough old-fashioned charm to make it stand out from its rivals – particularly in the summer, when the roof terrace is rammed with post-work drinkers hoping to catch a few rays of sunshine.
DJs plays sets up there too, even during winter months, and there are weekly quiz nights and a poker night if you’re feeling lucky.
The grub With the comforting promise that the kitchen “don’t pile food up in silly stacks” and “don’t mess about with tiny portions”, the food on offer is top-shelf.
There’s currently a ‘Dine and Wine’ special for £25, which includes two main courses and a bottle of vino – great value for those who don’t fancy breaking the bank for pub grub. And then there’s the friendly staff, so very little not to like.
Behind the bar Young’s stable of ales are complemented by special guest ales and microbrewery offerings. Plus they pour a decent pint of Guinness.
Bill please Pints from £3.45; glass/ bottle of wine from £3.85/ £15.20.
Verdict Though the pub can be a victim of its own success and gets a little too packed at weekends, The Alexandra gets it all right and has a lot of charm.
