The Football Association (FA) has charged Emmanuel Frimpong, a midfielder for Arsenal, of improper conduct after he called a rival fan a “y**” on Twitter.
The 20-year-old was responding to a taunting Tottenham fan, who said he wished Frimpong would break his arms and legs. Frimpong then proceeded to call the fan a “scum Y**" to his well over 500,000 followers.
Frimpong removed the tweet soon after posting it.
“Arsenal’s Emmanuel Frimpong has been charged under FA Rule E3 for improper conduct in relation to recent comments made on Twitter,” said an FA statement.
For decades, the term has been connected with the Tottenham football fans, who are predominantly Jewish. However, in recent years it has been deemed anti-Semitic, though many fans still use the term proudly to refer to themselves.
Frimpong has until 4pm on Friday to make a response regarding the FA charges.
