England squad announced: Rio Ferdinand snubbed for Ryan Shawcross

Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross has been called up for England duty but Man Utd’s Rio Ferdinand is left out by manager Roy Hodgson for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland.

Ferdinand, who was controversially left out of the England squad for Euro 2012, may have been hoping for a call up after the sudden retirement from international football last week by John Terry. Yet Hodgson has opted to omit the seasoned defender, who has won 81 caps for his country, effectively calling time on his career.

Shawcross has made several appearances for England U21s but it is yet to collect his first cap for the senior national side.

Elsewhere in the squad Hodgson has named, Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs has received a call up, so too Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon and 24-year old Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
