Former rugby league star Gary Mara has been killed when he was struck by an alleged drunk driver while on holiday in California with his family.
The 50-year-old, who played for Australian team Parramatta and South Africa's Balmain, was holidaying in Los Angeles with his family when he was hit by a car while crossing the road. He received the heaviest injuries in the collision, and died later in hospital, and his daughter was left with minor injuries.
“I have know Gary for the last 12 years or so,” said Steve Ginty, who worked at the pub Gary ran.
“He was just a very giving bloke with an incredible sense of decency.”
