World 62nd seed Gregor Dimitrov cruised through his first round encounter with Viktor Troiki in the ATP World Tour 500 event in Basel, serving up a stunning round-the-back- drop shot in the process.
Dimitrov won his round one match 6-3, 6-3, but it was this spectacular drop shot which has caught everyone’s attention, leading to many, including the commentator watching the game, to proclaim it to be the shot of the year.
Engaged in the middle of the rally, Troiki attempts a cross court passing shot with Dimitrov headed to his right. Off balanced and headed in the wrong direction, Dimitrov slows his pace, gathers his composure and sweeps the racket round behind him and catches the ball gently, for a drop sot that lands softly on the other side of the net.
Dimitrov went on to win his next match, against France’s Julien Bennetteau to earn a place in the semi final against either Paul Henri Matthieu or Nikolay Davydenko. Should he proceed further, there is a chance he could meet to see Roger Federer in the final, the Swiss playing in his hometown.
