After suggesting he would leave his position if Team GB failed to reach eight gold medals, the UK Athletics coach has stayed true to his word, according to reports.
Although Team GB's athletes produced some stunning results, particularly during 'Super Saturday', the Dutch athletics coach has resigned, according to The Daily Telegraph.
"I have mixed emotions. We haven't met the target that was set but at the same time we provided some awesome athletics and some iconic moments that will remain forever with the British nation, which fills me with pride." said Van Commenee recently as London 2012 came to an end.
Greg Rutherford, who won a long jump gold medal, defended the coach and suggested he should accept credit for many of Team GB's achievements "I think Charles is very hard on himself. For a lot of people it did work – Jess, Mo, Robbie, Christine and myself – and I think he should take a lot of credit for that."
Dutchman Van Commenee started his career as the national coach and technical director for the Netherlands team and began coaching British athletes in 2001. He has a reputation for stubborn and determined behaviour which has from time to time stirred up controversy. He has reportedly been offered a new contract by Niels de VOs, CEO of UKA, but has turned the opportunity down.
Prior to the Games Van Commenee spoke of his determination and what would happen if he failed to deliver eight golds for Team GB "If I hold athletes and coaches accountable every day, how could I work over the next four years if I am not held accountable myself? It's a no-brainer. I never understand when people have stayed in jobs, as in politics and football." he told The Telegraph.
The new UKA coach is expected to be announced next week.
