The court appearance of Mick Philpott, 55, and his wife Mairead, 31, has been interrupted by two people yelling “scum” and “bastards” at the couple who have been charged with the murder of their six children in a house fire.

Unable to control their emotions, the man and woman were escorted from Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The Philpots will appear at Nottingham Crown Court tomorrow, showing little sign of emotion as they were remanded in custody.

Six of their children died of smoke inhalation after the blaze swept through their Derby home on May 11. Five of the children all aged under 10 died at the property, whilst the Philpott’s 13 year old son Duwayne died in hospital two days later.

A Crown Prosecution spokesperson said earlier: "It is important to note that the defendants are entitled to a fair trial and nothing should be said or reported that would prejudice that right."
