The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to hospital yesterday to have exploratory surgery on his abdomen.

Prince Philip is expected to stay in hospital for about two weeks, but Buckingham Palace has said that the surgery was planned and is not of an emergency nature.

Prince Philip attended the Garden party at Buckingham Palace yesterday afternoon before being admitted.

The Queen is continuing with her engagements and is due to open the BBC’s newly improved Broadcasting House in London today, an event she had been due to attend with her husband.

Despite Buckingham Palace stating that the duke’s surgery is not of an emergency nature, there are inherent risks in a man of his age – he is going to be 92 this coming Monday – going under general anaesthetic.
