Australian police have made a record haul of £500m worth of heroin and crystal meth in Sydney which had been hidden in terracotta pots aboard a ship from Thailand.

The seize of 674 pounds of crystal meth was the largest made in the country’s history and the 555 pounds of heroin was the third largest haul of the narcotic.

The operation was the culmination of almost year’s work after a tip off from the US led them to this massive hit on a suspected Hong Kong based drugs syndicate.

“This is more heroin and more amphetamine than we often seize in an entire year,” said Home Office Minister Jason Clare of the police’s achievements.

The Deputy Police commissioner Andre Covin added: “This has prevented half a billion dollars of drugs reaching Australian streets.

“This was an 11 month investigation where we’ve had tight control over a number of people who we suspected of being involved in illicit narcotic importations.”

Seven people have been arrested in relation to the seizure, four from Hong Kong and three from Australia.
