Sheep exports blamed for recent spate of Western Australia shark attacks

The Humane Society International has called for investigations to be carried out into the export of sheep form the port of Fremantle after five people have died from shark attacks along the western coast, The Weekly Times reports.

The animal protection organisation’s spokesperson Alexia Wellbelove has alleged that the increase in shark attacks could be linked to the export of sheep, particularly to the depositing overboard of “thousands of dead sheep”. 



The disposal of the animal remains in this way is highly likely to be responsible for attracting large numbers of sharks to the area, Ms Wellbelove added. 



The Humane Society International has called on the West Australian Government to look in to shark behaviour to determine whether this practice has the effects that it is believed to.
