Australia’s Ashes fans have not taken kindly to their teams thrashing at the hands of England.
The once-dominant Australians were humiliated by an innings and 71 runs at the hands of the English at the Adelaide Oval overnight. Resuming at 4-238, Australia lasted a pitiful 20 overs before falling for 304, giving off-spinner Graeme Swann a five-wicket haul.
It was Australia’s first innings loss to England since the Boxing Day Test of 1986 and fans were livid, calling for the heads of spinner Xavier Doherty, Marcus North and even long-time skipper Ricky Ponting.
Loudmouth Aussie comedian Dave Hughes was among the first to tweet his embarrassment at the weak effort.
“The only thing the Aussie bowlers are worse at than batting is bowling,” he wrote.
The one bright spot for the men from down under was that fast bowler Stuart Broad will return to England with a side strain -but even that was an opportunity for tweeters to stick the knife in.
“Stuart Broad is going home with a bad side … not sure where the Australian team will sleep though, he’s only got a two bed flat,” @AndyPattinsonOz wrote.
@alistairjhogg took the opportunity to have a swipe at South Australia’s capital city: “Ha ha. Joke’s on you England! What on earth are you going to do for an entire day in Adelaide?”
But Ashes legend Shane Warne Warne – a man who once relished destroying the English – was humble in his country’s defeat. .
“Well the heavens haven’t opened and England have outplayed Australia in all depts … Well done to them they deserved there victory !!!” he wrote.
