The Tasmanian, who made his name as a stand-up comedian before going on to present the ABC show, Collectors, was handed two separate sentences for possession of child exploitation material and accessing child pornography.
Muirhead accessed ‘thousands’ of images, sometimes on a daily basis, across a period of 16 months. The pornography accessed by the 36-year-old was described in court as ‘sadistic’ and featured children as young as three.
Psychologist Dr Janet Baines said in court that it was her assessment that Muirhead was not a paedophile and had accessed the images due to stress, however the judge rejected this claim.
Muirhead apologised for his actions, and will serve five months after good behaviour and time already served.
