The extract from the book, written by Washington Post editor David Maraniss, paints the US president as a crossword solving, sarong wearing, warm lover, thanks to details spilled by Obama’s first serious girlfriend, 25-year-old Cook.
Obama dated Cook, the daughter of a prominent Australian diplomat, when he was 22 and living in New York.
In her diary – parts of which are reproduced in the book – Cook remembered how, on Sundays, Obama “would lounge around, drinking coffee and solving the New York Times crossword puzzle, bare-chested, wearing a blue and white sarong”.
She spoke of his “sexual warmth” and also wrote of the room where the magic happened – Obama’s bedroom.
Her ‘sensual’ description portrayed a man’s man: “I open the door, that Barack keeps closed, to his room, and enter into a warm, private space pervaded by a mixture of smells that so strongly speak of his presence, his liveliness, his habits — running sweat, Brut spray deodorant, smoking, eating raisins, sleeping, breathing.”
Cook and Obama met in 1983 and lived together briefly before splitting in 1985.
Can’t imagine David Cameron pulling off a sarong …
