America’s biggest sporting event, the Super Bowl, is famous for its adverts, which, for those who don’t give a toss about the National Football League itself, are the most interesting part of the football season in the US.

Yesterday, the Green Bay Packers were crowned champions of the NFL in the Super Bowl’s grand finale.

American sport is geared up to fit in lots of ad time – 63 commercials were aired during the Green Bay Packers versus Pittsburgh Steelers game. However airtime is seriously pricey during the Super Bowl: companies pay as much as $3 million of a 30 second slot.

Super Bowl ads have become so cult in the US that professors at Michigan State University’s Department of Advertising, Public Relations and Retailing have been rating them for the last 14 years.

This year, a baby-Darth-Vader-featuring Volkswagen Passat ad took first place.

For some Monday afternoon diversion, watch the ads here.
