Areas have been affected between Bondi Beach and Clovelly Beach, with particular weather conditions giving rise to this particular algal outbreak.
“It has got quite a fishy smell to it,” Waverley Life guard head Bruce Hopkins said to AP.
“It can irritate people’s skin but generally not much more than that.”
The red algae can cause problems with people’s skin and especially the eyes if they come into contact with it, and it is for this reason that the beaches where the algae has occurred have been closed.
