Lance Corporal Chrisopher Roney was based at Patrol base Almas, Helmand, and was involved in combat with enemy insurgents which necessitated the calling of air support.
A US apache helicopter (pictured above in a separate incident) and two pilotless drones arrived on the scene and opened fire on British ground troops who had been mistakenly identified as enemy combatants.
Eleven British troops were injured in the incident, as 200 30mm rounds were fired.
