You read right: the team at holidaycottages.co.uk is offering one UK-based dog the chance to apply for a newly created ‘Canine Critic’ role, giving one animal access to a host of free pet-friendly trips. As part of the role, the pet pooch and their lucky owner will get the chance to explore a variety of different holidays, to ensure they meet the expected high standards of holiday-goers travelling with animals.

In a bid to improve the services it offers to guests enjoying breaks with their pets, UK holiday specialists holidaycottages.co.uk is looking to hire an official ‘Canine Critic’ later on this year.

Rather than paying the successful canine applicant with a monetary salary, the position will be paid for in a series of four free holiday stays for the dog throughout the 2015/16 season. The animal’s owner(s), who will be reviewing the holidays based on how dog-friendly the destinations and cottages are, will also be able to take advantage of the adventures with their dog.

Sounds good? In order to ensure the position is filled by an appropriate applicant, the company has drawn up a list of essential characteristics for those looking to apply. These include:

–          House-trained (does not chew furniture, toilet-trained etc)

–          Minimum age of one year old (as of February 2015)

–          Sociable (good with other dogs/children)

–          Active

–          A nose for discovering new places

–       A good traveller

The owner of the chosen ‘Canine Critic’ will be asked to keep regular, up-to-date blogs and video accounts of the four holidays they take annually. Translation? You’ll need to enjoy writing, have good time management skills and be able to meet review deadlines.

Of the decision to hire the somewhat alternative team member, James Morris – managing director of holidaycottages.co.uk – says: “ We have always understood that dogs in particular are more than just ‘pets’ to our customers. They are a fundamental part of a family unit, which is why we are dedicated to offering getaways tailored to all members of the family, whether they have two legs or four!”

He continues: “While it may seem as though the owners of our lucky Canine Critic will simply get to sit back, relax and reap the benefits of some free trips, this is simply not the case. The role comes with a certain number of responsibilities that are vital in helping us to ensure that customers travelling with animals have the very best experiences possible.”
