My job involves… shoots, backstage work for catwalks, styling celebrities and working on my amazing clients!

I got my job by… working hard for 28 years. My love affair with hair began when I was 13. I just loved looking at magazines like Ebony and Essence and looking at these beautiful black women. I would try to replicate the styles I liked on my three-year-old sister. I really loved using my creativity to recreate different looks – the rest is history!

My day-to-day work includes… I never really have an average day because what I’m doing can change from one day to the next; I might be out of the salon on a shoot, working on a collection or caring for clients in the salon. When I’m working at Hair Lounge, I’ll start my day by walking to the salon (it’s a seven minute walk so super close!) and try to get in 15 minutes before my first client so I can prepare all my tools and kit so that every customer can be totally happy and relaxed during their appointment. On average, I’ll see between four and six clients a day and there will always be a real mixture of hair to work on, whether it’s cutting, relaxing, putting in a weave or colour.

The most rewarding part of my job is… working with all types of hair and having clients leave my salon with a big smile on their faces.

The most challenging part of my job is… The hours. Running my own business, my time is my most limited resource. I love what I do; it’s a blessing. However managing multiple roles in both the home and on business front, you need to be realistic as to what can be achieved each day.

My advice for anyone looking to get into this industry is..You need to have amazing creativity, be passionate, focused, determined and willing to learn as much as possible.
