The most successful Olympic cyclist of all time, Chris Hoy, announced his retirement this morning at a media event in his home town Edinburgh.
It was only last summer that Hoy led Team GB to one of their most successful Olympic medal hauls of all time, picking up his sixth gold medal on the track himself in the process.
There had been debate as to whether Hoy would follow up his impressive performance at London 2012 at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, but his retirement from competitive cycling means he will not be there now, at least not on two wheels anyway.
There are many who feel his contribution to the sport should see him earn a coaching role of some sort. With his impeccable record it is difficult to see him not going to the very top of the sport.
