Dan Kelly is inevitably going to draw comparisons to his uncle, Paul Kelly, the legendary Australian singer-songwriter behind classics Before Too Long and To Her Door. So let’s get it out of the way first, shall we?
But Dan Kelly sounds nothing like his famous uncle, not vocally, not instrumentally, not even lyrically. Inspired by everything from his environmental science degree to the novels of Ian M Banks to the Stones, Dan Kelly’s Dream is unashamedly poppy, kaleidoscopically psychedelic, mind-bogglingly inventive and utterly catchy.
If there’s a criticism to be made, then there’s perhaps a little too much going on in some songs but, overall, this is a pretty good dream.
