THE SCENE The fun with Grandma’s begins in finding the place (it is located underneath a shop with no obvious signage), but when you do you’ll fall in love because it’s the home you wished you always had. As the owners put it, “There’s no place like home, except Grandma’s”. And there really isn’t. The joint is somewhere between tiki bar and a 1950/60s lounge room, with tonque-in-cheek decor, and it’s living proof that Saturday nights in the CBD aren’t dead yet (just make sure you get in before 9pm when things get lively).

BEHIND THE BAR Don’t be put off by the small selection of beer and wine (and one cider) on offer because Grandma’s specialises in cocktails, lovingly prepared by ‘the grandchildren’ (bartenders to you and me), as the wall behind the bar spells out. Most cocktails are rum-based and as good as you’ll find anywhere, while the booze offering changes regularly in a bid to keep things exciting.

THE GRUB A small menu offers a range of jaffles (you know… toasted sandwiches with crimped edges and a variety of fillings) costing about the same as a beer. They also have bar snacks like biltong and you can get your hands on Grandma’s mixed nuts for $5.

BILL PLEASE Most cocktails come in at $16-17 and the beers and cider at $8-9. A glass of vino will set you back about $8.

VERDICT This local haunt  has a warm, inviting feel. Grandma’s is about drinking less, but better.

Basement, 275 Clarence Street, Sydney
