He was surfing with two friends at an area known as the Bar, near Elliston, when the beast struck.
The shark enjoyed two bites on his board, but all three made it safely back to shore without injury.
“That was my first encounter with a great white, and it certainly doesn’t make you feel like jumping straight back in the water,” McLeod told The Advertiser.
The shark was believed to be about 15ft long.
