Around 100 emergency response workers, from hospitals, public safety and management offices, the Maine National Guard and Maine Center for Disease Control, came together to consider how they would respond to the outbreak of an infectious disease, the ‘outbreak for this novelty training day being one spread by the undead.

Make up was applied to those who were ‘infected’ to create zombies of various different stages of disease. 

“This gives us the opportunity to do something a little bit different, but it still has the same principles that would apply in a real situation, Northeastern Maine Regional Resource Center director Kathy Knight said of the exercise. 

This drill comes after a spate of incidents across the US have fuelled debate that a real zombie apocalypse is on its way. A man was shot and killed by police in Florida last month after he was found to be chewing on another man’s face.
