What: Thousands of yellow rubber ducks – the kind so loved by Ernie on Sesame Street – are unleashed on the Neckar River. Each duckie is numbered (onlookers ‘buy’ them beforehand) and set free on the river, with the fastest to reach the finishing line winning its owner a prize.

Where: Tübingen, about 50km south of Stuttgart in south-west Germany.

When: October 3.

Why: The idea apparently originated in Canada, from where it was poached by the Germans.

Do it because: It’s great fun and in aid of a good cause.

How much: It’s free to watch and €3 to buy a duck. Money raised goes to charity.
