Berlin based travel search website, GoEuro, conducted a global survey of 51 countries across five continents examining the average price to travel per 100 kilometres – it looked at planes, trains and buses.

When it came to the winged variety, India was cheapest, followed by Malaysia, South Africa and Australia. Spain was fifth.

The top 10 most expensive countries were exclusively European, with the exception of Japan. So where should you avoid flying if you’re on a budget? Finland, Switzerland and Lithuania were the most expensive.

When it came to the train, South Africa was the cheapest – some 33 times cheaper than Denmark, which ranked last.

The cheapest bus fares are found in Egypt.
