Arsenal rfeacted to their humiliating 8-2 loss to Manchester United by signing Brazil left-back Andre dos Santos for £6.2million.

Immediately after the mauling at Old Traffod, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger moved for the attacking 28-year-old Fenerbahce defender, who has scored 10 goals in 52 games since joining from Corinthians and has 22 Brazil caps.

Dos Santos is likely to have a medical inspection on Tuesday before completing a four-year deal worth £40,000 a week.

Wenger is unlikely to stop there, though, and hs also inquired about Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder, although his £250,000 wages would represent a serious hurdle.

Arsenal have been battling through with an undermanned defence since the departure of Gael Clichy to Manchester City and Wenger has, until now, been unwilling to sign a replacement.

Wenger looked posied to go for Jose Enrique after having the Spanish left back watched last season, but the manager did not follow through and Enrique instead joined Liverpool for £6m.

In the aftermath of their loss to Manchester United, Arsenal have decided to reimburse the 3,000 fans who bought tickets to the match, offering to pay for a ticket to a future Barclays Premier League away game.

A statement on the club’s website read: ‘Our travelling fans were magnificent throughout and we want to recognise their fantastic support.’
