Having closed 2 years ago for 18 months, for the redevelopment, the museum, with the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund, was awarded £7.5 million to restore the St Mary-at-Lambeth structure and bring it up to times.
Not only has the Lottery funded and other donations helped transform the museum, it has meant it can upgrade facilities, making gallery space bigger and adding a new learning centre and garden.
The project means a recreation of John Tradescant’s Ark – Cabinet of Curiosities, and one of 17th century London that includes shells, plants, a stuffed penguin and dodo. This will all be done in association with the Ashmolean Museum who hold the collection.
Alongside this will also be the country’s first Archive of Garden Design, which will house artefacts of great garden makers from photographs to letters for the public to view at any time.
With the reopening and the cafe opening at the start of June, the Garden Museum, situated in Lambeth Road, makes for an excellent day out.
