The Drones (ATP Recordings)

Melbourne’s The Drones have always traversed harsh musical terrain and Havilah certainly doesn’t buck this trend.

The guitars, mostly ragged and abraisive (but sometimes gentle and melodic in a Neil Young kind of way), sustain long, rambling narratives on death, sex and God.

From the bleakness of the song’s themes to the painful rasp of lead Drone Gareth Liddiard’s vocals it can be an unrelenting journey, but a fascinating one all the same. ALISON GRINTER
