Why it works

Kate wanted to remember this moment atop Mt Pilatus, near Lucerne, Switzerland, with a classic tourist image. She does so with a man playing an alphorn (or alpine horn) framed by blue sky and snow-dusted alps. “I love Switzerland for its beautiful scenery and also the iconic images everywhere of their culture and heritage,” she says.

“This to me was the perfect image to capture a part of this unique country.” The peaks could be anywhere with mountains, but the horn gives this a sense of place.

Runner-Up

Ponte Vecchio Bridge
By Evan Wong, Sydney, Australia

Why it works

Sometimes a scene sets itself. “It was a beautiful, clear night and I was walking on the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge in Florence,” Evan explains. He says locals and tourists alike had gathered to listen to this “talented musician”. “In contrast to the busy afternoon, it was so soothing and harmonious – like the world had completely slowed down,” he says.

“I wanted to capture that moment where nothing really mattered.” The long exposure enhances the contrast between the still listeners and passers-by.
