His retirement from the Paris competition last month, due to on-going problems with his wrist injury, have meant that a return to next week’s Queens Club championship and Wimbledon afterwards will not be happening this season for the Spanish player.

He told his fans on his official facebook page: “As you can imagine it’s a sad decision but the injury on my wrist at Roland Garros needs time to heal,” he said.

Meanwhile, Andy Murray begins his Wimbledon preparations by returning to London’s premier competiton next week. The Scot, who has just come off the back of an amazing clay court season, tops the list of top players who entered the event including former French Open winner, Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic and Richard Gasquet.

Murray, who only last week made his first French Open final, when defeated by world no.1, Novak Djokovic, told the official website “If I could win it a fifth time it would be amazing. The names that have won it four times – they are all great tennis players.”

The world no.two who is going for a fifth title in London said that Queens brings out the best of him. “I’ve played some of my best tennis at The Queen’s Club over the years. Maybe it’s because I enjoy the tournament – it’s a great event. One of the nice things is that it’s at a club, which you don’t get that much on the tour.”

Another Brit following Murray to Queens Club will be Aljaz Bedene. The debutant steps in for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who, like Nadal, had to pull out of the French Open and Queens Club with an injury.

Other British players joining the former Wimbledon champion are Kyle Edmund, James Ward and Dan Evans who have all been involved in Davis Cup success representing Great Britain over the last few years.
