Assistant chief minister Sir Philip Bailhache has said: “The island should be prepared to stand up for itself and should be ready to become independent if it were necessary in Jersey’s interest to do so.”
Jersey’s financial set up has been designed to make it appealing for multi-national business. However, recent events, such as the furore over Jimmy Carr’s using a Jersey-based tax avoidance scheme and subsequent apology, has seen the island come under attack for those using it to limit the amount of tax they pay.
Prime Minister David Cameron even weighed in last week condemning Jimmy Carr’s tax avoidance plans as “morally wrong’.
