Overnight leader Mickelson carded 70 on an emotional final day at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania, as Mickelson managed 74, with the Englishman becoming the first Englishman to win a major in 17 years since Nick Faldo in 1996.

As well as winning his debut title, it was an emotional day for Rose, who won his debut title on Father’s Day, which was the perfect way to honour his late father, sometime caddie and all round golfing support, who died in 2002 from leukaemia.

“A lot of us come from great men and we have a responsibility to our children to show what a great man can be,” Rose said after his triumph.

“For it to all just work out for me, on such an emotional day, I couldn’t help but look up to the heavens and think that my old dad Ken had something do do with it.”
