The British comic actor yesterday filed for separation documents in Los Angeles citing “irreconcilable differences”, ending their 14-month marriage.

American pop star Perry, 27, wanted Brand to take the lead because her parents are both Evangelical Christian pastors who believe divorce is wrong.

According to TMZ.com, the couple – who married in India in October 2010 – knew their relationship was in trouble two months ago but were determined to work at it.

However, both Perry and Brand, 36, announced their love “just wasn’t there” any longer.

The pair made the decision to file divorce papers before spending Christmas apart, with The One That Got Away singer heading to Hawaii with friends, while the 36-year-old comedian spending the festive holiday in Cornwall, South West England.

The couple must now decide how they will split their combined £50million estate, with the divorce papers showing the rights to their properties are yet to be assigned.

They own a £2.5million California mansion together, while Brand has a £2million London home. Katy Perry is worth a reputed £35million, more than double Brand’s £15million.

Following the news yesterday, the Arthur actor said in a statement: “Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”
