SkyNews.com reported that Timberwolf the koala held onto the vehicle after he was struck near Maryborough in Australia’s Queensland state.
It wasn’t until the family in the car stopped at a service station in Gympie, some 88km (55 miles) away when they realised they had an extra passenger.
Vets took four-year-old Timberwolf to Australia Zoo’s wildlife hospital and, after a full examination, his only injury was found to be a torn nail.
Zoo employee Claude Lacasse said it was ‘absolutely amazing’ he survived and only suffered minor injuries.
“It’s a truly remarkable story. He’s a very lucky koala.” she said.
Set up by TV presenter and conservationist Steve ‘Crocodile Hunter’ Irwin, Australia Zoo treats about 70 koalas every month, many of them injured in car accidents or domestic pet attacks.
Timberwolf is now recuperating at the zoo in Brisbane and will soon be released back into the wild at the exact spot where his ordeal began.
