Agnel, who played a major part in winning France’s 4x100m freestyle relay on Sunday, finished the race two metres clear in one minute 43.14 seconds. The 20-year-old is rapidly becoming a star of the men’s Olympic swimming.

Taehwan Park of South Korea and Yang Sun of China tied for silver in the star studded Olympic showdown.

Agnel finished well ahead of the competition, in 1:43:14, while Sun and Park touched at 1:44:93. Lochte finished in 1:45:04.

German world record holder Paul Biedermann made freestyle fifth, followed by Britain’s Robbie Renwick.

Meanwhile, American Matt Grevers collected a gold medal in the final of the men’s 100 metres backstroke. Missy Franklin, also from the U.S. won 100m backstroke gold ahead of Australia’s Emily Seebohm, with GB’s Gemma Spofforth coming fifth.
