If she wins at Brands Hatch today for the 64km road race, Storey will which could see her equal wheelchair racer Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson’s haul of 11 gold medals.
It’s been an incredible journey for the cyclist – her first five Paralympic golds were won in the pool, where she was considered one of the swimmers in the world.
Storey began with a haul of two golds, a silver and a bronze as a 14-year-old in Barcelona 1992 and has won medals at every Games since then.
She only started cycling competitively in 2004 to keep fit after contracting an ear infection that forced her out of the pool.
Four years later in Beijing, she won two Paralympic golds on the track.
“I went into Beijing as a swimmer on a bike, like a fish out of water,” she told the Telegraph. “To think that I’ve done what I did in swimming now on a bike, it’s not sunk in at all, I don’t think it ever will.
“I’ve had a second chance in cycling to have another career and I just can’t get over how lucky I’ve been.”
