THE SCENE
As the word ‘pub’ is derived from the term ‘public house’, ideally, a good pub should almost be an extension of your own home. The Cock and Hen fits that bill nicely. Comfort is provided in spades: there’s plenty of space, large tables, booth seating and a warm atmosphere – thanks to the large amounts of polished wood and baroque wallpaper and to the friendly staff. Lighting from Victorian furnishings provides a soft glow – it’s the sort of place that invites hanging out on a chilly winter’s day. There’s wi-fi, a real fire and a huge beer garden. A community feel prevails, with the pub often holding poker evenings and other social events, although it can get a bit full when Chelsea has a home match. Any other time of the week is perfect.
THE GRUB
All produce is free-range. Try the chicken burger marinated in special Thai sauce served with homemade, skin-on, hand-cut chips. The grilled haddock, with Mediterranean vegetable salad, is also worth a try.
BEHIND THE BAR
A full range of beer – including a daily guest beer – and a decent wine list. The friendly staff are more than happy to recommend a bottle to complement your meal.
BILL PLEASE
Beers from £3.60; wine from £3.70 a glass, £15.25 a bottle; spirits £2.50.
VERIDCT
The perfect hangout if winter is inducing cabin fever.
