Montenegro is a great summer destination, with unspoilt beaches and pretty villages.There is one airline that flies direct from the UK to Montenegro, Montenegro Airlines, which runs services direct from London Gatwick to both of the country’s airports, Tivat and Podgorica.
You can also consider Dubrovnik as Montenegro’s unofficial third airport, as it’s only 17km from the border, offers a much better choice of flights and is actually closer to the popular resort town of Herceg Novi than the national airports. Flying into Dubrovnik will in fact work particularly well if you are planning to hire a car to explore Montenegro.
The must-sees include the pretty coastal old town of Budva and Lake Skadar National Park – the largest lake in the Balkans which is home to a large pelican colony.
Head inland to the Lovcen National Park to see Crna Gora, the mountain which gives Montenegro (which literally translates to ‘black mountain’) its name.
Finally, the picture-perfect bay at Kotor is a great area to base your holiday, with a selection of coves and old towns lining this stunning inlet. For a special occasion, you could splash out on a night on the exclusive resort island of Sveti Stefan. If that’s way beyond your budget (the cheapest suite in high season is around £780) eat at one of the resort’s restaurants instead.
