According to The Detroit News, 26-year-old Kai Xu’s plot was foiled when security officers found the reptiles hidden in his sweatpants.
The reptiles reportedly included several North American species, including Eastern box turtles, diamondback Terrapins, endangered spotted turtles and red-eared sliders.
Xu and another man, Lihua Lin, were arrested on Wednesday following an investigation by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
Lin was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after he attempted to board a flight to Shanghai with more than 200 turtles in his luggage.
Xu was caught at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel with 41 turtles taped to his legs and 10 more hidden between them.
Good job they weren’t snapping turtles…
