The young thoroughbred (the horses, not the player) will be stabled at a yard Owen co-owns with respected trainer Tom Dascombe.
Rooney and his wife Coleen have bought a yearling colt by Bahamian Bounty, out of a mare called Amazon Beauty, which cost 63,000 gns when it was purchased by trainer Tom Dascombe and his bloodstock agent Ed Sackville at Tattersalls in Newmarket in October.
Rooney is thought to have paid a similar amount for the unnamed colt.
The horse was bred by Roundhill Stud, which also bred Red Cadeaux, beaten by a short-head in last month’s Melbourne Cup.
The bay colt could be running on the Flat as early as the Chester May meeting when Sir Alex Ferguson traditionally takes the United team for an end-of-season day out .
Rooney visited Owen’s 160-acre Manor House stables near Chester yesterday with United team-mate Tom Cleverley and his TV magician pal Dynamo.
A source told the Sun: “Wayne and Coleen are both big racing fans. She is a regular VIP guest at the Grand National and he has become more interested thanks to his horse-mad pal Owen.
“They’ve bought two young horses and have asked Michael to look after them with the view to racing them in a year or so depending on how they develop.”
Dascombe and Owen have had several successes this year. Star colt Brown Panther recorded a number of high profile victories.
