A fire in his wife’s plane caused an emergency landing. Mr Romney said that she might have been better off had the windows been let down to allow outside air in.
“I appreciate the fact that she is on the ground, safe and sound. And I don’t think she knows just how worried some of us were,” Mr Romney said, according to the LA Times. “When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no – and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous. And she was choking and rubbing her eyes. Fortunately, there was enough oxygen for the pilot and co-pilot to make a safe landing in Denver. But she’s safe and sound.”
Experts commenting on Mr Romney’s proposal said that an open window would fuel the fire with more oxygen in addition to potentially tearing the aircraft in half from the rapid loss of cabin pressure.
The comments come soon after a video leaked of Mr Romney declaring that 47 per cent of Americans would vote for incumbent President Barack Obama because they were dependent on the government and did not pay taxes.
Mr Romney seems to be following a tradition of verbal gaffes.
His father, once governor of Michigan George Romney, ended his run for president after letting it slip that he had been “brainwashed” by the military after a trip to Vietnam.
