So, it’s packed full of regulars who treat it as a second home, and keep coming back, attracted by the warm smiles of staff, top-quality pints and hearty, homemade grub. Having been established in 1549, it’s an English pub to its core – expect stripped oak floors and cosy booths. And, as the name suggests, there’s a nautical theme, with photos and paraphernalia.
The grub: Eat next to an open fire, upstairs in the quaint Oak Room. Pig out on a mouthwatering Sunday roast, or dive into indulgent dishes such as baked-in-the-box Camembert, sticky pork ribs, sausage and mash or steak. The bar menu is just as impressive – from Alderton ham, two eggs, chips, to pie of the day.
Behind the bar: Sink a pewter of real ale from the remarkable list on offer – four permanents, including Old Speckled Hen, and two weekly guest choices. There’s also a fantastic selection of wines, lagers and bottle beers behind the bar.
