”I’d like to see where Travis is today,” he said recently in an interview with The Guardian.

“There was something about the guy – all that rage and alienation, that’s what the city can do to you. I mean, Marty (Scorsese) and I are from New York, and even we can feel  alienated.”

He also revealed how and Taxi Driver screenwriter Paul Schrader and director Martin Scorsese had once tried to make a sequel work but the die they had didn’t make it through to fruition.

“We did take a shot at something, whether it was an outline or a script, I forget. But somehow we didn’t feel it was right and it didn’t take off.”

De Niro’s latest film, The Family, sees him back on familiar-ish ground playing a US mobster who has been relocated to France on the witness protection programme along with wife Michelle Pfeiffer and kids, only to find things don’t go exactly as planned and it is hard to give up their former, violence-strewn ways.

The Family is out this Friday.
