Samuel L Jackson’s reading of Go the Fuck To Sleep, a pseudo children’s book by Adam Mansbach, has gone viral on the web as fans revel in listening to the actor repeatedly saying “fuck” in the middle of a seemingly innocent story.
Go the Fuck To Sleep is a tongue-in-cheek children’s book (that not many parent’s would actually read to their sprogs) in which the narrator begs their child to go to sleep, like ever other creature is doing.
The joyously inappropriate book is made even more so when you hear it read in Samuel L Jackson’s gravelly voice.
Sample lines include:
The flowers doze low in the meadows,
And high on the mountains so steep.
My life is a failure, I'm a shitty-ass parent,
Stop fucking with me, please, and sleep.
The cubs and the lions are snoring,
Wrapped in a big snuggly heap.
How come you can do all this other great shit,
But you can't lie the fuck down and sleep?
Go the Fuck To Sleep is illustrated with pictures of a wide-awake child surrounded by sleeping animals.
Despite the fact that a PDF of Go the Fuck to Sleep is currently circulating the web, the book has gone to No. 1 on Amazon’s bestseller list.
In the introduction to Jackson’s reading of the book (listen below), he admits that when his daughter was little he would tell her, "go the fuck to sleep".
"I think at some point, she would look at me when I would come in her room, and she'd say, 'Go the fuck to sleep, Daddy?" And I'd say, 'yeah go the fuck to sleep," Jackson said.
The book hasn’t been without its critics. Christian group Family First called on New Zealand's booksellers not to stock Go the Fuck to Sleep.
"While in an adult context, the book may be harmless and even amusing, we have grave concerns about its effect on aggressive and dysfunctional parents, and also on children who are attracted to the book," said director Bob McCoskrie.
Audible.com is also offering the Sam Jackson reading of Go the Fuck To Sleep for free.
