Secret Machines (World’s Fair)
Although the prog-rock tag has occasionally been applied to their work, Secret Machines aren’t very good at progression.
Album number three is more of the same; which, given the fact they started out as a conservative stoner-rock act, makes it a tricky sell.
They’re at their best when they stick to thumping, bass-rich grooves: certainly, there isn’t a song worth a damn anywhere here, and vocalist Brandon Curtis doesn’t have a strong enough voice to merit monopoly of the spotlight. WILL FULFORD-JONES
